Furious scenes have erupted in Spain by a Catholic Archbishop stating that domestic violence happens because “women do not obey men”.
The Catholic Archbishop, Braulio Rodriguez, told his followers in Toledo, Spain that wives could avoid domestic abuse by doing what they are told.
He suggested that women could be free from physically abused by not asking their husbands for a divorce.
He told his followers in his sermon:
“The majority of cases of domestic violence happen because the woman’s partner does not accept them, or rejects them for not accepting their demands.
“Or often the macho reaction comes about because she asked for a separation.”
Rodriguez also quipped that the majority of problems in a relationship stem from the fact that the couple were not in a ‘true marriage’. He goes on to criticize the practice of what he called ‘quickie divorces’.
“I don’t think our political leaders are worried about divorce figures when they have fought so hard to implement the so-called quick divorce.”
The abhorrent comments were made during mass in Toledo Cathedral on December 27, and the sermon was later published in the Our Father parish bulletin.
Hundreds, if not thousands of angered Spanish women have now taken to social media, berating the cleric for his ridiculous notions…
“The archbishop of Toledo has linked domestic violence to couples not being in a ‘proper marriage’. So says the celibate man who believes in a ghost.”
“He should be locked up for inciting violence. This idiot should keep his medieval views to himself.”
Domestic violence accounted for the deaths of 56 women in Spain in 2015 with more than one million cases of domestic violence seen by Spanish courts since 2007. Judges have only handed down prison sentences to 148,000 men.
