This shocking story highlights the plight of many children in India.
A baby girl was left in a terrible condition, in a bin and covered in ants for the simple fact that she was a girl.
Boys are much sought after in India, and in some other parts of the world, including China die to many social factors.
Seen as a stronger heir to inherit the family business or fortune, or simply seen as a better commodity, baby boys are the preference in such areas.
This often mean shocking situations like this arise, with new-born baby girls being treated exactly as if they are an unwanted piece of trash.
This particular incident happened in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, where police say the discovery was made by a passer-by who thankfully heard the cries of the abandoned child.
The girl was found wrapped in a plastic bag.
Dheeraj Rathore took the girl to a nearby hospital to be checked over and cared for.
“I was passing through the bin when I heard the cries of a baby. I was was shocked to see an infant’s head sticking out of a red polybag in a garbage vat among the bushes. Ants were all over her head and body.”
The girl is now in hospital, but is still in a critical condition after her terrifying ordeal. Doctors say bruises found on the child’s body could indicate she suffered abuse before she was abandoned.
Weighing just 3.5lbs the girl is in a fragile position, and this also indicates a lack of care for the child in the very early stages of her life.
Police say they have registered a case and are now searching for information which will lead them to the parents who committed this horrific crime.
