California has taken a step in the right direction when it comes to healthy food for students.
Students at schools in California’s Sausalito Marin City District will be feed only meals made from 100% organic ingredients, and free of GMO’s.
School meals have been a point of contention in recent years, with many schools providing very low standard meals for their students, which many complain is damaging to their learning.
Healthy eating is a lifelong commitment which should start when children are young. When children are given junk food and learn unhealthy eating habits when they are young it is much harder for them to break the cycle when they are older.
When given too much bad food at a young age, children’s brains actually become hard-wired to crave fatty, sugary foods and completely reject the taste of fruit and vegetables, so the decision by this school district to get them learning how delicious healthy organic food can be is certainly a step in the right direction.
Bayside MLK Jr. Academy in Marin City and Willow Creek Academy in Sausalito students will be among some of the first to sample the new organic menus thanks to the initiative from the Conscious Kitchen in association with the nonprofit organization Turning Green.
Judi Shils the founder of Turning Green has said:
“Students everywhere are vulnerable to pesticide residues and unsafe environmental toxins,” and “Not only does this program far exceed USDA nutritional standards, but it ties the health of our children to the health of our planet. It’s the first program to say that fundamentally, you cannot have one without the other.”
Hopefully this initiative will be the start of a larger movement towards a healthy eating revolution in younger people.
America and indeed the world is getting fatter and sicker, and something needs to change fast.
Giving young people these nourishing foods at a young age should set them up for a life of healthy eating choices, and hopefully reverse the obesity epidemic.
