Parents of a dead child find the grave marker removed by Pastor.
Crystal and Wayne Leatherman tragically lost their son Jake last year after a battle with leukemia.
But on recently visiting her son’s grave, Crystal found that the grave stone had been removed. She found out that the very Pastor that sold her family the stone had removed it over what he claims was an unpaid bill.
The Leathermans believed they had payed the correct amount for the stone, but Rev. J.C. Shoaf who manufactured the stone claims there is an unpaid amount, due to changes that were made to the stone, and this was his reason for removing it.
After finding the devastating change, Crystal told WBTV:
“He repossessed it, like it was a car. If I would have owed him the money I would have paid him. This is not something you argue over.”
Rev. Shoaf backed up his decision saying:
“If you buy something, you’ve got to pay for it. No matter what it is,”
“Because they had been through so much emotionally, grieving so hard, I thought we’d just go ahead and do it. They’ve been through an awful lot, I know that. And right now, they’re thinking emotionally, and having that grave out there unmarked – that’s emotional trauma. I lost a child, I know what that is,”.
A Hickory family found this when they visited the grave of their 5-year-old son. Coming up at 5, I’ll tell you why the marker is missing pic.twitter.com/wdyIJ32aNF

While this seems to be an incident of crossed wires, the way the Pastor removed the grave stone suggests a lack of proper thought as to the sensitivity of the situation was considered.
Shoaf his since said that he feels for the couple, and this is the first time in his decades of producing marker stones that this has happened. The couple are now looking into having a headstone produced by a different company.
