Reece Witherspoon has claimed she was sexually assaulted when she was just 16.
In light of the recent Hollywood cover-up scandal involving Harvey Weinstein, many women have come forward with their own stories.
The scale of the problem which has come to light regarding Weinstein has opened up a Pandora’s box of problems which seem to widespread across Hollywood.
The sheer amount of victims claiming to be from just one man shows just how rife the problem is, and how shocking it is that so many people apparently knew, and did nothing to stop it.
Hollywood favorite Reece Witherspoon has now come forward with her own story, in which she claims she was sexually abused when she was just 16 years old.
She has claimed it was the director of a project who attacked her, and was persuaded to keep quiet by other working on the film as not the jeopardize any of their jobs.
Witherspoon shared her story at Elle’s “Women in Hollywood” event where she said:
“I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly and I find it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate a lot of the feelings that I’ve been having about anxiety, honest, the guilt for not speaking up earlier,”.
She bravely continued:
“[I feel] true disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment.”
The amount of household names that have come forward regarding this problem has shocked many, as people wonder how abusers like Weinstein got away with it for so long.
Now the sheer amount of allegations cannot be ignored, as there will presumably be devastating repercussions for Weinstein himself, this might have been the catalyst for something to be done about the wider problem of sexism and abuse in the film making industry.
