Christian teacher embroiled in child sex scandal.
Iowa school teacher Curtis Van Dam has been charged with 140 criminal counts of child sex abuse.
He was a teacher at a Christian elementary school for 13 years, and the criminal counts are all in connection with abuse suffered by children under the age of 14.
The official number of complainants has not been release by police, although they say that the number is growing as more victims come forward after the floodgates were opened, as is often the case with matters of this nature.
The former Sioux Center Christian was first arrested in October and since then the counts against him have been mounting.
At present the counts he faces are 14 counts of sexual exploitation by a teacher, 72 counts of 2nd degree sexual abuse, 12 counts of 3rd degree sexual abuse, three counts of lascivious acts with a child, 34 counts of lascivious conduct with a minor, and five counts of indecent exposure.
Police Chief Paul Adkins who has been working on the case said:
“The entire community is shocked and also very saddened,” Adkins said. “Emotions are very high in the community” “I’ve been here for 44 years and we have never had anything like this at all happen,” he continued “I’m trying to protect the victims as much as I can,” Adkins said. “I can tell you there were numerous victims and that all the victims were children.”
Head teacher Josh Bowar confirmed the news about his former teacher, and suggested the community turns to God to help them through.
“Though the number of charges do not necessarily reflect the number of students, we are grieved again as we hear the extent of the charges.
We’ve wept, now it’s time to weep again. We’ve prayed, now we need to continue praying. We’ve brought our anger and fears to the Lord, and now we need to lay those feelings again at His feet.”
