One man’s quest for justice over son killed by cops.
With alarming frequency we see and hear stories of people, usually young men who are killed by armed cops in situations where the outcome could be been so different.
As each month passes and the death toll for these deaths grows higher, it is easy to lose track of every individual case. It is very different, however if one of the victims was a close relation.
Lt. Col. Michael Bell, lost his son, also named Michael, 13 years ago when he was killed in an alteration with some armed police officers.
Michael Jr. had been on a night out with his friends, and come the end of the night was the soberest of the group and therefore volunteered to drive his friends home.
During the drive he was pulled over by a police car and was asked to exit the vehicle. One being told to get back in the vehicle, the cops says he did not comply with their demands. An altercation ensued and tragically Michael was killed by a single gunshot fired by one of the officers.
To many people, this story reads all too familiarly and echoes many other similar cases, but Bell Sr. is determined not to let his son’s memory fade, and wishes to bring shame on the cops that murdered his son.
He has bought advertising space on 24 billboards in Kenosha, Wisconsin which bear his son’s face, details of the case and his desire for an investigation into the murder, in the hope of getting justice for his son.
Bell Sr. spoke of his son’s gentle nature and the shock of losing him in such a brutal way. He said “I cannot even think of one time in my son’s life where he even fired a bb gun,”
Michael Bell Sr. has been an activist for gun law changes since his son’s death in 2004, and in 2014 the gun laws were changed meaning an investigation must be held when a suspect is killed in an officer-involved shooting.
