Depression caused by physical problem, doctors claim.
Depression is one of the most debilitating illness with one of the highest death rates.
While little is still understood about the disease, one thing most people will agree on that it is a ‘mental’ illness, a silent killer that has no physical symptoms.
But a certain group of scientists are staring to believe that depression is a physical illness, and that it is created by inflammation in the brain.
If this is true, then it means a huge breakthrough for depression and they way it is treated, there could soon be a physical cure to this mental illness.
Studies have shown that depression is linked to chronic inflammation in the brain, cytokines and inflammatory messengers are often found in the brains of depressed people.
The BBC have reported:
“The focus is on an errant immune system causing inflammation in the body and altering mood … [Professor Ed Bullmore, Ph.D., head of psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and an employee of GlaxoSmithKline] said: ‘Depression and inflammation often go hand in hand …
[I]f you have flu, the immune system reacts to that, you become inflamed and very often people find that their mood changes too. Their [behavior] changes, they may become less sociable, more sleepy [and] more withdrawn.
They may begin to have some of the negative ways of thinking that are characteristic of depression and all of that follows an infection’ …Inflammation is part of the immune system’s response to danger … If it is too high, it causes damage. And for some reason, about one-third of depressed patients have consistently high levels of inflammation.”
Work on this is already underway, testing has revealed that taking anti inflammatory medication boosts your mood, and the arthritis drug sirukumab is also being used to test its effects on depression.
There are many natural ways to help reduce inflammation in the body. Turmeric is an excellent natural anti-inflammatory, as is making sure you get enough vitamin D.
