New report reveals bungling errors at the Pentagon.
A new report has revealed that $21 trillion dollars was ‘misplaced’ by the Pentagon and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Pentagon has come under fire in the past years under the Trump Administration but it has been revealed that misdemeanors have been going on in the government for at least 17 years.
The report stated that between 1998-2015, $21 trillion of taxpayers money was somehow ‘lost’ in the system.
The Office of Comptroller report states:
“Unsupported journal voucher adjustments” are defined as “summary-level accounting adjustments made when balances between systems cannot be reconciled. Often these journal vouchers are unsupported, meaning they lack supporting documentation to justify the adjustment [receipts, etc.] or are not tied to specific accounting transactions.”
Balancing the books at the Pentagon seems to be an impossible task, last year it was reported that the U.S military also lost $6.5 trillion in “wrongful balance adjustments.”.
Reuters reported the army:
“lacked the receipts and invoices to support those numbers [the adjustments] or simply made them up” to“create an illusion that its books are balanced.”
The report comes as many people in the country are still struggling from the effects of the financial crisis, many cities and indeed states are seeing some of the worst poverty for years and declining living standards as well as high unemployment and crime rates.
USA Watchdog reported that the losses account for “$65,000 for every man, woman and child resident in America.”
The government have tried their best to reign in these accounting errors, but it seems the beast is too large to tame. Every department were given deadlines to produce documents to explain their accounts over the last 20 years, but many failed to do so, with the Department of Defense being one of the worst.
It really does seem that the government have got so much money they can’t control it. Even more shocking is that this figure is thought to be a conservative estimate, and the real figure could actually be a lot higher.
Next time your Senator tells you that certain changes in your area are not possible due to a lack of funds, now you know why.
